What to expect

We welcome all abilities

Most basic techniques are covered within the first few classes and can then be explored by the individual. More complex skills can be introduced, including stone setting, charcoal casting, box making, surface texturing and reticulation. All classes are design-led, and the individual should steer their own learning to achieve their personal goals. Pre-booked sessions are steered towards those over 18 years. Younger people are welcome if accompanied by a paying adult, over the age of 16 unless pre-arranged with me.

Small groups

We have a maximum of five students in a session, each student works individually rather than on a tutor-led project, allowing students to work at their own pace and also enabling beginners and those with some knowledge to work comfortably within the same group, which has many learning benefits. I’m very happy to advise on the purchase of tools and materials, and can also arrange visits from gemstone suppliers, and trips to trade fairs.

a defined skillset

I believe that a jeweller cannot be proficient in every skill and technique involved in jewellery making, so I would expect students to use specialist craftspeople for things like casting, lapidary work, engraving and I do not teach enamelling or working with precious metal clay.

Please feel free to bring your own tools, sketching equipment and plenty of enthusiasm!

This cost does not include materials, which can be bought from me or purchased by yourself. All sessions make perfect gifts and can easily be booked for someone else. Either book a specific date or buy a voucher.

Ad hoc workshops

One-to-one classes and arranged small group session costs depend on the number of students attending, but is approx. £30 - £40 per hour per student for up to 3 participants, for up to 4 hours.

You can come with a group of friends (Max 5) and spend three hours making a piece of jewellery. It’s a lovely way to spend a morning, afternoon or evening. The cost does depend on how many participants are involved and what materials you use. It could work out to as little as £36 per person, plus approx. £10 each for materials.

You can bring your own refreshments, but no alcohol can be consumed during the workshop session.

Looking for something different for younger people?

Try something new

Come and make a piece of jewellery. Not only will the group learn new skills, but they will also all have a personal memento to take home and wear.

The workshop sessions are designed specifically to cater for the age of the young person. The group will all work on a similar project, and be guided and assisted by me. I require at least one paying adult to participate alongside the group (Max 5). The cost of a two-hour session is £30 per person, plus approx. £7-£10 for materials.

FAQs

What to expect

So that you can get the most out of your workshop session here's a few pointers as to what you can expect of me.

  • The sessions are led by you and your designs. So, I can give as much input as you need, don’t be afraid to ask for help, but on the flip side I will need to spend time with others during the session too. Session numbers are kept low to allow for this.

  • Depending on how prepared you are you should be looking at making at least one simple piece of jewellery. Most beginners start by making a hammered band ring or a pendant.

  • Most artists spend years honing their designs. I would advise beginning on a journey to find your own design style. Looking for inspiration at source rather than other people’s design is far more satisfactory. A pebble from a beach, a leaf, a pet or a favourite flower are great places to start. We can discuss this further during the workshop sessions.

  • You will be provided with everything you need to design and make your jewellery, Silver is charged for in addition to your session charge.

However, if you have materials you’d like to use then you can bring those, you are also welcome to bring your own tools too. Please make sure they are easily identifiable!

Finally…

  • If you are staying for a 5-hour session bring lunch. I provide a variety of hot drinks.

  • Please bring something warm to wear if we are experiencing cooler weather, and similarly, if it's warm please do still make sure you have your toes covered.

  • Long hair should be tied back.

  • You are very welcome to get prepared for the session by thinking of what you might like to make, so bringing all those ideas sketched in a notebook or sketchbook would be advisable too.

  • If there's anything you feel is important for me to know about you before the session, please do let me know.
